Want to dip your toe in the proverbial DIY pool, but not sure where to start? Then this is the perfect beginner-level DIY for you!

I purchased a pair of ottomans from Target several years ago, and after a few moves and multiple states later, they were definitely in need of some updating.

Since we’re social distancing and staying home as much as possible these days, I wanted to use only supplies I already had on hand. Lucky for me, I always keep a small stash of supplies leftover from previous projects, so I got right to work after gathering a few things: fabric, batting, scissors, screwdriver, staple gun, staple remover, and extra staples.

Begin by removing the base of the ottoman using a screwdriver. Next, use a staple remover to remove the old fabric – which will be the most time consuming part of the project! But don’t worry, it’s super easy after this point.

Next, cut the batting so that it is slightly smaller than the cushion you wish to cover so that you can stretch it over the sides, then staple it to the base using the staple gun. I chose to go for a smooth top as opposed to a tufted top, so there was no need to redo the buttons.

Cut your fabric so that it is large enough to cover the top and sides of the cushion, but also account for a couple extra inches on either side to allow for stapling to the bottom. I recommend folding the edges over prior to stapling so no raw edges are exposed, and be sure to cut small spaces through the material to account for the screws that will reattached the cushion to the base. Before stapling, it is important to be sure the material is pulled taut, and I recommend folding the corners similar to when wrapping a gift!

Lastly, reattach the legs using the original screws, and voila! You now have a set of ottomans with a fresh look!
