When things aren’t organized, it can drive me a little batty 😆 We don’t have a huge walk-in pantry like you see all over Instagram, so we’re always looking for creative ways to better organize our small pantry so that things are as accessible as possible. We’ve always especially struggled with organizing our spices, and because we enjoy cooking a wide variety of foods, we have a ton of them. We used to keep them in our pantry in two-tiered drawers, but that setup wasn’t ideal. Then we managed to clear out half a drawer and place most of them there, but they were a hot. mess.
I knew I needed some drawer organizers, so enter my next DIY project! These spice drawer organizers are a super easy DIY that’s totally beginner-friendly. Here are the supplies you need but they’re also linked here:
- 1/4″ x 3″ poplar boards for the drawer divider (only necessary if you’re not able to use an entire drawer, adjust size as needed based on height of drawer)
- 1/4″ x 4″ poplar boards (size of your boards may need to be adjusted based on drawer / jar sizes)
- 1″ square wooden dowels (you can opt for smaller dowels as needed)
- Miter saw
- Wood glue
- Pin nailer
- Sander
- Polycrilic
- Spice jars
- Labels
Start by measuring the length and width of your drawer, then proceed with cutting your boards to the appropriate lengths. Pro tip: If you’re making a divider, cut the board so that it will be really, really snug. I’d rather the board be just a hair too tight for the drawer so I can just sand it a little to make it fit, than it be too small! I did this and did not have to secure the board any other way to the drawer – and trust me it’s not going anywhere!
Cut the square dowels to the exact same length as your 4″ poplar boards, then use a little bit of wood glue to adhere it to one end of the board, then use a pin nailer to secure (just three pin nails per piece is plenty). You don’t actually have to use the pin nails if you don’t want to. If you choose not to use the pin nails, simply clamp the pieces together until the glue has dried. Then sand with 220 grit sand paper (start with coarser and move to finer if needed, but 220 grit was all I needed), then wipe with a tack cloth and seal with matte Polycrilic.
Lastly, wash all your glass spice jars, then adhere your labels, and transfer all your spices into the jars! Once your organizers have fully dried, place them in the drawer. This will all depend on the size of your drawer and the jars you purchase, but I left about 1/2″ – 3/4″ between each row and that worked really well!
And voila! In less than a day, you have an organized spice drawer that is customized to fit your kitchen perfectly! This is an easy DIY that’s great for DIYers of any skill level, so I hope you’ll give it a try! 😊
